Love the money (Dexta Daps)

So Dexta Daps got really popular after his 7eleven song - the one in which he wanted to be  her 11th boyfriend. Now he has a song called 'Love the money'. So in 'love the money' he says the lady knew he had a girlfriend and he knew she had her man, but now he's upset because she didn't love him. Like seriously?? Really?

One interpretation is that the two persons became each others' lovers knowing that they were both attached to other persons. They decided to pursue a relationship on the side, then the woman decided to change the rules of the game. Now she threatens to tell the man's spouse about their illicit relationship as a way to blackmail him into giving her more money. So he's not hurt because she doesn't love him. He's hurt because she wants to blackmail him into giving her more money for keeping his cheating a secret.

What I don't get however, is why he is bringing love into it. There was no love in the beginning and there is no love at the end. It seems maybe he started catching feelings for her along the way and now he's upset that she didn't catch the same train to 'pointless land'.

Anyways, have a listen to the song, after all, Dexta Daps, controversial as he may be, is one of Jamaica's hottest dancehall artistes at the moment. The translated lyrics are provided below.

WARNING: It contains explicit language.

They're gonna talk!

Beres Hammond is one of my favourite artists. His music is so mello. He has gotten a bit old these days though, so he doesn't produce much music anymore. Anyways, his musical catalogue is long enough for him to retire comfortably without fans like me begrudging his inactivity. I am quite satisfied with all the songs I have to choose from his catalogue.

So today I will Explain the lyrics of one of his songs, entitled 'They gonna talk'. This song is in broken English, so it should be easy for non-Jamaicans to understand.  However, let me still provide an explanation for the benefit of those who still find it difficult to comprehend his lyrics.

The song is basically a love song. Two persons are in love or like each other a lot but one partner is overly worried however about how their relationship will be perceived by others. So Beres Hammond says 'as long as we know what's in our heart, we know our inner thoughts...' there's no reason to worry. That is, as long as we know that we are sincere in our feelings, we don't need to worry about other people doubting our love. In the chorus he continued to say people will talk, they will say a lot of things about the lovers.

The lyrics project an image of a poor man and a rich girl falling in love or a market vendor and a stockbroker falling in love. In such scenarios, people will definitely have an opinion on the couple's relationship because of their different social statuses. Beres' message is, 'let them talk, because as long as we are sincere in our feelings for each other, we have nothing to worry about'.

They gonna Talk

Some things were meant to be, so why not let it be and stop worrying about it.
Long as we know what's in our hearts, we know our inner thoughts, hey, no reason for concern.

Chorus:
They gonna talk, they gonna talk, they gonna say a lot of things about us.
You said you know that love is not a sin, but you worry about what people say
when they see me with you
Wonder what the crowd would say  when they find us together
Wonder what the people say when they know we are in love
Worry what the crowd would say

You pass them on the street, yes
Greet you with a smile, hey, as broad as a nile.
They will say all kind of goody goody to you, yes, that lingers for a while
All there in your mind - you wanna go, you wanna stay
It seems you can never ever make your mind up about it,
well,  but if you know that love is deep within, why should you worry what the folks will say?

When they see me with you?
Worry what the crowd would say when they find us together
Wonder what the people say when they know we're in love.
Wonder what the people say, oh yea

Wonder what the people say when they see me with you
And you wonder what the crowd would say when they find us together
Worry what the people say when they know we are in love
And you wonder what the people would say, yea yea

[Chorus]

New Music

New music is always welcome to my ears. When I say new music, I mean new genres, new songs, new artists, and new spins on old songs. Recently I listened to 'sugar' by maroon 5, several mixes by Skrillex and some other Electro Dance Music artists. They undoubtedly lifted my mood in times of need. However, the artist that has created an avalanche in my brain is called STROMAE.

Upon discovering Stromae's music I can't go a day without his melodic voice caressing my soul. He's positively addictive. His voice, his language, his clothes and of course, his music videos. Ooo la la! He is definitely the 'sugar' that Maroon 5 was talking about in their song. :) Well, he's the sugar in my interpretation of the song.

Anyhow, Stromae is a Belgian with a Rwandan father and a Dutch Mother. That mixture of genes led to an awesome physical output. More Rwandans and Dutch people need to hook up and make babies with velvet skin and perfectly curled hair, haha.

His looks are only one part of the addiction though. His music and videos are the main sources of attraction. The first song I heard was 'Tous le memes'. At first I couldn't understand anything that he was saying, but I didn't need to. The music had me dancing at midnight in the middle of the streets and singing 'tous les memes' and 'rendezvous'. I later watched an interview and heard him saying that many people tend to respond to the sincerity of his music and don't require lyrical understanding to vibe to it. Later, of course, I watched a video with subtitles and quite liked the lyrics as well. It has been so long that I've had such a craving for an artist's music that I feel like I've been shocked back to life by this Stromae.

So, I've mentioned his looks and his music, but when I watch him in interviews, my love for this guy grew some more. He's amazingly humble and charismatic. He makes me want to just wrap in a hug and never let him go.

I'm going to end here because I'm getting another wave of desire to hear his voice and practice my french by reciting his lyrics :).

Look at that velvety skin!

By the way, here's a more official article about him :)

Thinking out Loud by Ed Sheeran

This song has a certain soothing effect on me. Notice how he doesn't say I'll love you forever. He says 'til we're 70'. The song is not pretentious about time. No one really knows what forever really means, but the way the author feels will last a long time and he predicts that he will feel that way until he's at least as old as 70 years.

  • When your looks don't work like they used to before
And I can't sweep you off of your feet
Will your mouth still remember the taste of my love
Will your eyes still smile from your cheeks
  • And darling I will be loving you 'til we're 70
And baby my heart could still fall as hard at 23
And I'm thinking 'bout how people fall in love in mysterious ways
Maybe just the touch of a hand
Oh me I fall in love with you every single day
And I just wanna tell you I am
  • So honey now
Take me into your loving arms
Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars
Place your head on my beating heart
    I'm thinking out loud
Maybe we found love right where we are
  • When my hair's all but gone and my memory fades
And the crowds don't remember my name
When my hands don't play the strings the same way, mm
I know you will still love me the same
  • 'Cause honey your soul can never grow old, it's evergreen
Baby your smile's forever in my mind and memory
  • I'm thinking 'bout how people fall in love in mysterious ways
Maybe it's all part of a plan
I'll just keep on making the same mistakes
    Hoping that you'll understand
  • But baby now
Take me into your loving arms
Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars
Place your head on my beating heart
    I'm thinking out loud
That maybe we found love right where we are, oh
  • (Ah la la, la la la, la la la, la la la la)
  • So baby now
Take me into your loving arms
Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars
Oh darling, place your head on my beating heart
    I'm thinking out loud
That maybe we found love right where we are
  • Oh maybe we found love right where we are
And we found love right where we are

  • When your looks don't work like they used to before
And I can't sweep you off of your feet
Will your mouth still remember the taste of my love
Will your eyes still smile from your cheeks

Let there be love!

I love this song. I think when God said 'Let there be light', he also meant love. This song, especially the nonsensical chorus is awesome :).

Lyrics: Let there be love!

Let there be you, let there be me
Let there be oysters under the sea
Let there be wind, occasional rain
Chili con carne and sparkling champagne

Let there be birds to sing in the trees
Someone to bless me whenever I sneeze
Let there be cuckoos, a lark and a dove
But first of all please, let there be love

A doo bee yu, dup du baa, be ba, da dup, dap, beea
See da ba dap, ba bap bap baap, paayeea, peeduuya

Let there be birds to sing in the trees
I need someone to bless me whenever I sneeze
Let there be cuckoo, cuckoo, a lark and a dove
But first of all please, let there be love
Oh, let there be love y'all

Ooh, we gotta have some, really gotta have some
We need love, love, love love, love, love, lovely love
Say we need a little bit of love, little bit, little bit of love

Oo shu bee bee dup dup, shu bee shu bee dup
Really need a little bit
Da ba beepa beepa beep, da ba beepa beepa beep
Da pa da pa da da da dap, dapa dapa daeeya
Dapa daeeya
Daapa dueyaa
Dap dueeya, dueeya

1, 2, 3 I'm loving you

123 I love you ~ Tarrus Riley

So I stumbled upon this song (and video) on Christmas day (2014) and I can't seem to get enough of it. The video makes me reminisce on my teenage years. It's very cute and the lyrics are essentially those of a love song without the sadness or neediness of the usual 'love songs'. So, I really like it, but then I read a few of the comments under the video on YouTube and realized that I've gone completely colour blind or maybe I've always been blind to it. Apparently the young lady in the video is white and "this video encourage(s) young blacks (to) be obsessed with white girls, no matter the danger, shame..." (according to the YouTube member N-zey Cele). This was the first comment I saw and I was taken aback.

This video has nothing to do with race in my opinion. It's a cute love story about teenagers with protective daddies and the love or infatuation that will lead to outright disobedience of protective parents. That's all. I guess the class statuses shown in the video are extremely opposite to simply exaggerate the difference in their economic realities, however to two teenagers with a love bug that is of no consequence. They are both willing to disobey their parents just to be together because they love, miss and want each other (according to the song lyrics). As another YouTube member, Elise Gray commented,

"According to me, this video is not racist but realistic in a way. Just wanna remind you that Tarrus is black so wtf with racism? This video shows that love is not about skin colour, economic hierarchie or whatever you think, love is all about feelings. There is no rule for it!"

Lyrics
1-2-3 I'm loving you
4-5-6 I'm missing you
7-8-9 I want you back
1-2-3 I love you
4-5-6 I Miss you
7-8-9 I want you back
Here within my arms again.
Long time, no see
Without your love I'm lonely
I miss you
And its too hard to bear
What have you done to me?
I'm waking up in the middle of the night
Without you
And its so unfair
I toss, turn, reach for you
Only my pillows
Awake, the morning
Sun rises, but I'm alone
Hurts me so.

1-2-3 I'm loving you
4-5-6 I'm missing you
7-8-9 I want you back
1-2-3 I love you
4-5-6 I Miss you
7-8-9 I want you back
Here within my arms again.
It shows, on my face
Evidence is right here
My smile has been erased
Can't you tell?
I have no appetite
My food has no taste
I'm losing weight
Thought you could be replaced
I day dream of you and me
And how great we used to be
And I firmly believe
Of turning these dreams into reality
Like a child would say so easy to you

1-2-3 I'm loving you
4-5-6 I'm missing you
7-8-9 I want you back
1-2-3 I love you
4-5-6 I Miss you
7-8-9 I want you back
Here within my arms again.
Brett-like solo
Long time, no see
Without your love I'm lonely
I miss you
And its too hard to bear
What have you done to me?
I'm waking up in the middle of the night
Without you
And its so unfair

1-2-3 I'm loving you
4-5-6 I'm missing you
7-8-9 I want you back
1-2-3 I'm loving you
4-5-6 I'm missing you
7-8-9 I want you back
Here within my arms again

3 little words of little importance

I grew up in a society that didn't place much emphasis on the words 'I love you'. Love was shown by actions and everybody understood that. However, over time I've grown sensitive to those words. It seems that American television has brainwashed me into thinking that a confession of feelings is more important or equally as important as the actions of love. Mere confessions of love are seen all over American media. Personally, I think these words are overrated. The Chinese have a similar belief in actions over words. I recently read an article at
about communication in a Chinese home. The article spoke about how well children learnt to read cryptic emotional messages in their families. They learnt how to understand the thing that was heard but not said. On that note, do we need to promote public display of affection in our conservative societies so that we'll be more Americanized? I don't think it's necessary to say 'I love you', what is important is showing the people around you that you care. They will understand it, even if they are Americans who expect to hear the words. I am not totally against it being sad in times when it really matters and needs to be said, but words without actions are meaningless.

So my question is 'why do Americans think it is so important to say those three little words?'. After meeting someone for a few months, I may develop deep, sincere feelings for him or her but why should I be rushing to declare these feelings? It seems like couples in Americanized societies are running a race to see who will say the words first. But wouldn't it be better to wait and carefully hone the relationship over time and use those words only when you are absolutely sure that this person is worthy of your love? From television shows and other forms of media and also just people around me, it seems normal for people to 'fall in love' every few months, but once you understand love, you'd realize how impossible it is to fall in love that frequently. I think falling in love is like throwing an anchor from a ship into the deep blue sea. If the relationship ends, it won't be easy to simply haul the anchor back onto the ship. If it were, then it wouldn't be an anchor, but a float. Pulling it up takes a lot of time and strength and in my estimation, that equates to more than just a few months of recuperation. So, what I'm saying is, what many of us call love is not really love. It's that word I learnt in high school, infatuation. It's like a float that is thrown overboard a ship. It's lightweight and easy to maneuver.

Bad Boy by Big Bang

I really like this music video and song even though I couldn't understand much at first. Boy, I wish I had chosen to live in South Korea instead of this place! What is it about Korean men that makes me so gooey inside? My friend JujuJamz introduced me to this song. She found it strangely addictive and I can completely understand why. They are a set of cute 'bad boys' :) with nice voices to woo me in 한국어 (Korean).

I've grown bored of the mainstream music. I search for things in other languages. I think people who live their entire lives in an environment with only one language miss out on more than 50% of probable life experiences. The language of a country exposes us to the way the people of that country think and experience things. On the contrary, this song by Big Bang, 'Bad boy' doesn't teach me anything new about South Korea. Take a look at the translated lyrics below. The song is basically about a guy who thinks he's a bad boy, so he treats the girl like crap, then expects that her love for him will remain. However after she leaves he begs for her to stay. Just crazy. I guess it tells me that some South Korean boys aren't much smarter than western boys (even though they study so hard in school, haha).

I was too harsh that night
I didn't know you would really leave
The words, “I’m sorry”, is too difficult for us that we take it to the end
Because I’m ill-tempered
We fight over stupid things numerous times a day
You take off crying, I look around and think,
‘She’ll come back tomorrow. She’ll definitely call me first in the morning’
Baby, I can’t, I’m so bad that I want to be good to you but it’s hard
Every day and night I’m so mean cuz I’m so real so I’m sorry (but I can’t change)
I’m the one you love but sorry I’m a bad boy
Yes, just leave me, good bye, you’re a good girl
The more time passes, the more you get to know me, only disappointments will remain but
Baby don’t leave me, I know you still love me
Why, yes, I’ll tell you the truth, I need you
My lay lay lay lay lady
My lay lay lay lay lady
You say that I’m different than other guys so it’s hard
You’re still like a young girl with a soft heart
For you, who is always smiling next to me, I’m still too young
With the excuse that I’m busy, I postpone our date
Because I’m sorry, because I’m frustrated, I turn my head
The bride in my dreams is just a friend now
Upset over the breakup, we are silent
Baby, I can’t, I’m so bad that I want to be good to you but it’s hard
Every day and night I’m so mean cuz I’m so real so I’m sorry (but I can’t change)
I’m the one you love but sorry I’m a bad boy
Yes, just leave me, good bye, you’re a good girl
The more time passes, the more you get to know me, only disappointments will remain but
Baby don’t leave me, I know you still love me
Why, yes, I’ll tell you the truth, I need you
My lay lay lay lay lady
My lay lay lay lay lady
Don’t say a thing
I act tough but I’m not inside
Don’t abandon me
You know that there’s no one who will understand me like you, baby
Oh you, come back to me ye ye ye
I’m the one you love but sorry I’m a bad boy
Yes, just leave me, good bye, you’re a good girl
The more time passes, the more you get to know me, only disappointments will remain but
Baby don’t leave me, I know you still love me
Why, yes, I’ll tell you the truth, I need you
My lay lay lay lay lady
My lay lay lay lay lady
I’m the one you love but sorry I’m a bad boy
Sorry I’m a bad boy, Sorry I’ma bad boy
Yes, just leave me, good bye, you’re a good girl
You’re a good girl, you’re a good girl (X2)
